Back from Antarctica

Well, now that Dad and I are back from our trip, we have lots of pictures and video that we hope to share with you here. Over the next few days, we will be posting our travel journals along with accompanying pictures so that those of you who are interested can experience it with us. Please be patient, as there are thousands of pictures to sort through and edit (the wonders/horrors of digital photography)! Enjoy

MV Lyubov Orlova

Our ship is the Lyubov Orlova
According to Quark Expeditions, this ship has been renovated in 2006, and features an Ice Strengthened hull. The ship now offers Kayaking and camping on the continent (which we will try, weather permiting). The Lyubov Orlova has a crew of 70 and passenger space for 112. There are 3 lifeboats with a capacity of 292 persons. I hope we won't need these. She is 90.0 m in length, and her breadth is 16.24 m and her draft is 4.65 m. Propulsion is provided by 2 Diesel engines, producing 5,209 horsepower. The Lyubov Orlova is classified as ice class L3, and can make 12 knots at top speed.

I am excited to see her in person, as the pictures available on the internet make her out to be quite a beautiful ship. Renovations sound like they make her a nice place to stay as well, which I am sure will be appreciated since the majority of the expedition will be spent aboard ship.

Post 1

Over the next few months, I will be posting about my ongoing preparations for the trip, including a gear list, itinerary, and some reflections on readings and field guides that my father and I are reading before the trip. Hopefully, we will be able to update the blog at least a few times while on the ship, but if not, those posts will be written in journals, and then recorded on the blog afterwards. Thanks, and welcome to Terra Australis!
